Annapurna Base Camp Trail Gets Major Upgrade to Boost Trekking Safety

The popular Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trekking route in Nepal is undergoing a major upgrade as authorities move to make the trail safer and more comfortable for the growing number of local and international trekkers.

The Annapurna Rural Municipality has started improving the section from Ghandruk Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) in Kaski, along with building new tourism infrastructure to strengthen the region’s position as a world-class trekking destination.

The project includes construction of stone steps, widening of narrow sections, safety measures in high-risk areas, and improved facilities along the Deurali-ABC route. The area is considered challenging due to snowfall, landslides, heavy rainfall, and falling rocks.

Annapurna Rural Municipality Chairman Bishnu Bahadur KC said the work is focused on improving safety for trekkers heading toward the base camp.

“ABC trekking has seen an increase in domestic and foreign tourists. Annapurna has global importance. Therefore, we are building the trekking route to provide more convenience to tourists visiting this region,” he said.

The upgrade is being carried out with a budget of Rs 4.5 million in the current fiscal year through a joint investment from the Nepal Tourism Board Gandaki Province and Annapurna Rural Municipality.

Officials said the project is especially important as the infrastructure is being developed in a remote Himalayan area located above 3,500 meters, where safety remains a major concern.

Annapurna-11 Ward Chairman Him Bahadur Gurung said the improved route will create better conditions for both trekkers and local communities.

“The improvement of the Deurali-Machhapuchhre Base Camp trekking route will be convenient for tourists. In addition, it will help local hotel businesses, transportation services, marketing of agricultural products, and tourism-related economic activities,” he said.

Known for breathtaking views of the Annapurna massif, Machhapuchhre, and Himchuli mountains, the ABC trek remains one of Nepal’s most famous Himalayan journeys.

Authorities believe the upgraded trail will provide travelers with a safer, smoother, and more organized trekking experience while supporting local tourism growth. Further plans are also being prepared to improve other trekking routes, rest areas, information centers, and tourism facilities across the region.
