Sundarijal ➔ Mulkharka ➔ Chisapani
Ascending from the northeastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, the trail from Sundarijal to Chisapani provides a classic mountain journey into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. This day trip takes you out of the busy city streets and straight into cool alpine air, dense woodland trails, and traditional Tamang hill settlements. It is an ideal adventure for travelers looking to experience authentic Nepalese mountain environment within a single day.
The trek begins with a spirited climb along stone staircases laid beside roaring water channels, waterfalls, and large supply reservoirs. As the steep stairs level out, the surroundings transform into lush forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron. The path weaves through Mulkharka, a serene village where terraced farmlands cling to the hillside, giving you a wonderful look into local rural life against the backdrop of the sprawling Kathmandu basin below.
Pushing deeper into the protected national park, the forest canopy thickens, creating a tranquil environment filled with wild bird calls and rustling leaves. The final stretch leads directly onto the high mountain ridge at Chisapani. Emerging at this elevated vantage point reveals impressive panoramas of snow-capped Himalayan giants, rewarding your physical effort with unmatched northern mountain vistas before our return journey.
Our guide greets you at your accommodation lobby in Kathmandu. Boarding our private transport, we head toward the northeastern corner of the valley to start the trek.
The vehicle stops near the entrance to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Here we handle park permits and prepare daypacks beside the rushing river.
Footwork begins on a series of stone steps alongside large water pipes and gushing cascades. The uphill trail leads into thick woods before emerging into the Tamang settlement of Mulkharka, where terraced fields overlook the valley.
A short break in this hillside village allows time to catch your breath, sip local tea, and soak in the rustic surroundings.
Leaving Mulkharka, the trail continues upward into a dense canopy of oak, pine, and rhododendron trees. Cool mountain air surrounds us as the path climbs steadily through deep nature toward the high ridge.
Stepping onto the ridge at 2,300 meters brings us to the destination village of Chisapani. Massive views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks unfold across the northern horizon. We gather at a local tea house for a hearty lunch and well-earned relaxation.
Private transport meets us in Chisapani for the scenic road journey down through the hills and back into the valley.
Our day ends back at your accommodation. You return refreshed with fond memories of the mountain trail.
