Sundarijal ➔ Mulkharka ➔ Okhreni ➔ Sundarijal
Positioned on the northeastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, the Shivapuri Circuit Hike provides a wonderful journey through the rich biodiversity of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Starting from the bustling riverbanks of Sundarijal, this day trek weaves together dramatic natural scenery, cultural encounters, and peaceful alpine environments. The trail takes us through protected watersheds, vibrant Tamang villages, and deep mountain forests that feel worlds away from urban noise.
The terrain presents a varied and engaging trail surface. We begin with a disciplined uphill walk on stone stairs alongside gushing waterfalls and freshwater reservoirs that supply the capital. As the path climbs beyond the initial stone steps, the incline moderates into soft dirt trails beneath a dense forest canopy of oak, pine, and rhododendron. Walking along these shaded pathways allows you to take in the fresh mountain air, listen to the songs of diverse woodland birds, and catch glimpses of local wildlife along the way.
Reaching the high villages of Mulkharka and Okhreni opens up impressive panoramic views across the Kathmandu basin and distant Himalayan ridges. The combination of quiet terraced farmlands, traditional village hospitality, and pristine woodland paths makes this circuit a remarkably well-rounded excursion. Descending back toward Sundarijal along an alternate trail completes our loop, offering a deeply satisfying outdoor adventure in just a single day.
Our guide meets you in the lobby of your Kathmandu accommodation to begin the journey. We board a private vehicle for the smooth drive toward the northeastern rim of the valley.
We step out of the vehicle at the Sundarijal trailhead, where the sound of rushing water fills the morning air. After completing national park permit checks, our group gathers for a short safety overview.
The walk kicks off with a steady climb up stone staircases alongside the roaring Sundarijal waterfall and water reservoir pipes. As we press higher, the urban landscape gives way to rich forest cover before the trail opens into the hillside village of Mulkharka.
This traditional Tamang settlement offers a vibrant cultural experience with its local stone homes, terraced fields, and prayer flags. You have time to rest your legs, enjoy local tea, and admire the sweeping views across the Kathmandu basin.
Leaving Mulkharka, our route winds deeper into the protected woodlands of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Dense oak and rhododendron trees canopy the path as we ascend toward the peaceful mountain hamlet of Okhreni.
At an elevation of 2,010 meters, this quiet agricultural village serves as the high point of our circuit. We stop here for a wholesome lunch break, soaking in the serene rural ambiance and distant mountain vistas.
Our loop continues downward along a tranquil forest trail that gradually connects back toward the main valley basin. The shaded downhill walk passes small mountain streams and lush vegetation, providing a gentle end to the circuit walk.
We reach the trailhead at Sundarijal, concluding our circular hike through the national park. A short pause allows everyone to rest before boarding our private vehicle for the drive back to the city.
Our private transport delivers you safely back to your hotel in Kathmandu. You finish the day with refreshed spirits and memorable stories from the hills.
